Hepatitis C linked to Parkinsons

A study here in Neurology has shown a link between Hepatitis C and Parkinson's Disease.
In Taiwan about 5% of the population has been exposed to the Hep C virus and they have found that people that have been exposed to the virus have double the risk of Parkinson's Disease. With less than 0.5% of the UK population infected this is less of a worry. However the rates of infection among injecting drug users in the UK are around 5% so this population of individuals should be regularly tested.

The best test for a chronic infection is the Hepatitis C antibody test while a test to detect viral RNA is better for recent infections as the antibodies can take several months to become detectable.
