1:3 to get Diabetes

Sugar
Nearly half of middle-aged European adults with normal glucose levels will develop prediabetes during the remainder of their lifetime, and most of them will eventually progress to type 2 diabetes, according to the latest data from a prospective cohort study in the Netherlands.
"We knew from previous efforts in the United States that the lifetime risk of diabetes is about one in three, so the fact that this is also the case in Europe was not very surprising," said Symen Ligthart, MD, from Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

"We were more surprised by the high number of eventual insulin users, which was one in 11 in our study population among those not [already] using insulin at the age of 45," she added.

"This means that almost 10% of our population will sooner or later use insulin therapy, which is a substantial number."

The study was published online November 10, 2015 in Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.
